Additional Information

The Cost Distance and Distance Accumulation tools use distinct underlying algorithms that can lead to different results and dissimilar operating restrictions. The Distance Accumulation tool increases the precision of the distance calculation by treating the distance surface as continuous, unlike the discrete surface used by the Cost Distance tool. To define a surface, at least three noncollinear points are needed, and this restricts the size of the smallest features the algorithm can safely deal with. No-data cells are only connected diagonally, or passages through them fall into that category. And to prevent incorrect results, the no-data is thickened.

Workaround

  • Decrease the cell size of the cost raster to improve connectivity.
  • Use the Cost Distance tool.
  • Utilize the Pixel Editor to add pixels to improve connectivity in the cost raster.
