The Alter Field tool returns the error, “ERROR 001600: Failed to alter field name”, or “Network I/O error” when used in an ArcSDE 10.0 geodatabase using the Application Server connection.

ArcGIS for Server 10.0 is currently in mature phase of the product lifecycle. Please use direct connections as a workaround for this issue.
