Switching the symbology type in the Symbology pane reverts to previous changes, thereby losing a lot of time previously spent in setting up the symbols.

This is by design. Retain colors in a multi-colored symbol case is not always feasible or desired. Recommended workflow is to take advantage of the Favorites style. Save the symbols a user wants to reuse. The symbols appear at the top of the galleries.Workaround
