Spatial selection using selected features in the source layer returns the message, "The operation was attempted on an empty geometry" when the selected source features are outside the target layer's feature extent.

Workaround

  1. Switch to ArcGIS Pro or use the Pro arcpy library.
  2. Modify the feature extent of the target (input) feature class so that it encompasses the selected source features.
