Spatial ETL tools do not run in the background processing when it is the first Geoprocessing tool executed in an ArcGIS session.

Workaround
There are two workarounds to this issue:-Disable Background Processing by performing the following steps:1. On the ArcMap or ArcCatalog file menu, click Geoprocessing2. Click Geoprocessing Options3. In the Background Processing group box, uncheck Enable4. Click OK-Leave Background Processing enabled and run any other Geoprocessing tool prior to running the Spatial ETL tool. For example, a quick and easy Geoprocessing tool to run is the Data Management > Get Count tool on any feature class or table. Once the tool has successfully completed, you can then run the Spatial ETL tool.
