This issue is fixed in ArcGIS 10 release.

Workaround

1. --With Data Interoperability direct-read, add the “PlacemarkCollection” layer to a new map document.--Right-click on the layer in ArcMap, then Data > Export Data to convert the line geometry. This workaround can also be used via Interoperability Connection. 2. --Create a Spatial ETL Tool (OpenGIS KML Encoding Standard to <Esri format>) with default setting through the Wizard.--Connect the “COLLECTION” attribute from the Geometry Filter transformer to the “Placemark_line” feature type destination/writer (Placemark feature types).
