Python scripts which use ‘mxd.replaceWorkspaces’ throws an error when replacing the data sources to a file geodatabase that does not yet exist but only if there is a group layer in the map document.

Workaround

Remove the group layer or copy the database that houses the original data to the new data source workspace.
