Workaround

There are two potential workarounds that have been identified for this issue, although it will likely not work for most users:

  1. There are no negative shape areas when opening the feature layer in ArcGIS Pro as a .pitemx from the item details of ArcGIS Online and then using the Export Features tool in ArcGIS Pro (instead of Export Data to a shapefile or file geodatabase from ArcGIS Online).
    1. However, this would not work for most users, as for example users with these datasets in their Open Data Hub sites need to have reliable downloads.
    2. Some users also do not have ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Negative shape areas can be repaired in ArcGIS Pro by using the Repair Geometry tool. However, when this tool is run on the dataset, the values are often a minimum of 30 feet off the shape areas for ArcGIS Online. This makes the repair geometry method of fixing the negative values unideal as users would have incorrect data.
