Modifying the horizontal coordinate system first within the 'Display XY Data' pane returns an error if a Z field is chosen from the table.

Additional Information
The error in the coordinate system dialog is necessary to prevent incompatible x,y and z coordinate systems. If a vertical coordinate system that does not have the same WGS_1984 datum as the pre-selected x,y coordinate system is selected, the same error is returned (it works both ways). Regarding the second point, geoprocessing tool parameters do not offer a 'None' option, this is accomplished by clearing the text.Workaround
- Change the vertical coordinate system first.
- Add a Z field after the horizontal coordinate system is selected.
