Make XY Event Layer tool cannot use X and Y coordinate fields that are type TEXT - makes it impossible to use .txt tables as input since all fields are assumed type TEXT.

Workaround

Import the .txt table to an ArcGIS-writable format, then add new numeric fields, and calculate the new fields equal to the old TEXT fields.
