Bug

Layers with a forward slash in the name return the following error message, "ERROR 000732 Input Features: Dataset <dataset 5/24> does not exist or is not supported", in geoprocessing tools in ArcMap 10.7.1.

Additional Information

By design in ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro data names cannot contain any of these characters: \ / : * ? & " < > | , nor can they start with a number. This is system-wide and same in the UI and in Python for all tools.

Workaround

  • Replace the slashes with spaces or underscores.
  • In python, replace layer.name with layer.nameString.
