Labels that appear as expected in ArcMap 10.2.1 appear flipped/upside down in ArcMap 10.3.1, 10.4.1, and 10.5 when using the Maplex Label Engine.

Additional Information

The Never Remove label parameter is turned on. This is where these flipped labels come from. They are not normally placed as the placement is set to begin at the start of the line and to follow the line direction. This results in unplaced labels as the labels are upside down.

Workaround

1. Flip the problematic line using the Flip Line tool.2. Change the Maplex setting under Placement Properties > Label Position > Label Offset > Position Label from 'Along the line from start' to 'At best position along the line'.
