Item Description window displays off screen if it was last opened on a second monitor and there is no connection to that monitor; this is common when using a second monitor with a laptop.

Delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\Desktop10.0\ArcCatalog\Settings\DescriptionWindow key in the registry to display the Item Description window.Delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\Desktop10.0\ArcMap\MetadataViewWindow key in the registry to display the Data Source Item Description window.
