Additional Information
Unable to reproduce the performance issue specific to an accelerator opening the ArcMap 10.8.1 Help as described in this defect. The gray box in the Search tab is displayed regardless of how Desktop Help is opened, with or without an accelerator, assuming the Search tab is the last active tab viewed in the previous Desktop Help session. This issue can be resolved by clicking a different tab and navigating back to the Search tab, upon which all elements should load normally.
Workaround
Click Help > ArcGIS Desktop Help from the toolbar in ArcMap to open the ArcGIS Help window, and click the Search tab.
