Inserted objects (for example, Word, Excel documents, and so forth.) do not display or open properly when a map document is used as a map document template in ArcGIS 10.

Additional Information

Templates were not supported starting at ArcGIS 10.0, this issue will not be addressed

Workaround

Insert the object after starting a new map document from a map document template. OROpen the map document with the inserted object directly and select 'Save as'.
