Additional Information

This will not be addressed. Please edit the alias lists in the locator style to have the desired alias as the first alias to get the desired result. This is described in the Alternate Solution section.

Workaround

Modify the schema of the USAddress.lot.xml.To change the Locator XML schema to output the desired alias when running the standardize address tool:1. Navigate to <a href="file:C:/Program" target="_blank">C:\Program</a> Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Locators.2. Make a copy of USAddress.lot.xml.3. Save it in a backup folder, as this is the original XML schema. If required to revert back, paste the XML schema file back to the default location and overwrite the one changed.4. Right-click USAddress.lot.xml and edit with an XML editor program (for example, Notepad++).5. For a quick example, scroll down to line 23177. It is in the section that "<!--This section defines the Street types and their aliases.-->". Notice that Road is the first alias in the list. If this is deleted, the locators are unable to recognize the alias 'Road'. Do not delete this alias.6. From the attached Customizing Locators.pdf - Page 32 - "Note that for prefix and suffix types, the Standardize Addresses geoprocessing tool will output the first value among the alternates for the output standardized value." For example, when running with this locator XML schema, it outputs 'Road' as the SufType because it is the top of the list.7. Navigate back to the XML schema, and cut and move '<alt>Road</alt>' down one and '<alt>Rd</alt>' to the top.8. Save the XML schema after doing these edits. Run the Standardize Addresses tool. This outputs SufType = Rd, because Rd has been moved to the top of the XML list. 9. Notice that 'Rd' is abbreviated. The PreDir (North, South, east, west) is located around line 21644 and the method is the same as above.Alternative Workaround:- Uninstall SP3.Alternative Workaround 2:- Install Version 9.3.1 locators.1. Version 9.3.1 address locator style must be used with this tool. Download the 9.3.1 address locators at:<a href="http://resources.arcgis.com/gallery/file/geocoding/details?entryID=12D8D400-1422-2418-34B0-4FE1CC06C0ED" target="_blank">http://resources.arcgis.com/gallery/file/geocoding/details?entryID=12D8D400-1422-2418-34B0-4FE1CC06C0ED</a> 2. Once the files are downloaded, unzip and copy all the locators to the base locator folder in ArcGIS 10. The default path is <a href="file:C:/Program" target="_blank">C:\Program</a> Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\locators. 3. Once the locators are in this file, they are available in 10.4. Run the Standardize Addresses tool. 5. Use the the Address Locator Style: US ONE ADDRESS.The output contains the abbreviations.
