Additional Information

SimSum (like many CJK fonts) does not provide a separate bold and italic face. ArcMap is able to simulate italic by adding a skewing effect to the font and fake bold by drawing it with thicker strokes, But we are not able to fake bolding in PDF format (there's no analogous method in PDF). So this is a known limitation. Recommended workaround would be to use a font that does natively support bold or italic faces, or to use a print to PDF driver that does font substitution or fallback. reference: https://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FMID=2165 (no bold or italic face listed)

Workaround

Print the map to PDF with a PDF driver such as Adobe or Foxit. The following video link shows a workaround of the issue: <a href="http://www.screencast.com/t/WUzThhze" target="_blank">http://www.screencast.com/t/WUzThhze</a>
