Additional Information
The reason the selected cities do not list a senior segment because the Tapestry Segmentation systems assign a single dominant segment assignment at the Block Group level. Therefore, even though the city may include some senior population unless the senior population is much larger than the national average in the block group then the block group is not be assigned as a senior segment code. The segments in the city totals are the ones included as the dominant for the block groups underlying the city boundaries.
Workaround
Any of the workflows below to identify areas with higher concentrations of seniors:
- Identify block groups in the county that are assigned to senior segments (Dominant Tapestry Map at the block group level).
- Thematically shade cities based on % Pop 65+ to identify cities with the largest percentage of the senior population.
