If Avast Antivirus is installed, it recognizes Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files from the 'C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.2\bin' as viruses and affects the overall usability of ArcMap, which either crashes or has several functions disabled.

Description

When attempting to export a map in 10.1 or 10.2, ArcMap may freeze or stop functioning. Users may also see unexpected issues with the overall usability of ArcMap. The program may either crash or disable functionality in the software.

Cause

This is a known issue. If Avast Antivirus is installed, the program recognizes .dll files from the C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.2\bin as viruses.

Workaround

Either disable Avast Antivirus, or exclude the bin folder from scans by following the steps below.

  1. To open the Avast user interface, right-click the Avast tray icon, and select Open Avast! User Interface.
  2. Navigate to Scan > Settings > Exclusions.
  3. Browse to and select a directory or path. Click Add > OK.
