If an .xlsx file is used for a join, the join is not maintained when dragging a feature class to a new ArcMap instance.

.xlsx files are not supported for joins. Please convert your file to .xls. See documentation here: http://support.esri.com/en/technical-article/000008968. Additionally, you can run the Excel to Table Conversion tool to create a table in your geodatabase.Workaround
