If an ArcSDE 10 connection is opened in ArcCatalog 10.1, and the instance is renamed to something which still allows the connection to be made, then after the connection is made in 10.1, the connection in ArcCatalog 10 becomes dysfunctional, resulting in a Bad Login User error due to a modified password.
