If a spatial database engine (SDE) workspace connection exists when opening a map document, which contains no SDE data, the ArcGIS Engine application still accesses an SDE Geodatabase.

Duplicate of BUG-000087822. This issue is resolved in the next release.

Workaround

Release the SDE workspace object after use.
