Bug
If a selection symbol is added to a FeatureLayer outside of its visible scale range, the graphic is removed when zooming in to its visible scale range.

Please reach out to Esri Support Services if this is still an issue in the latest version of the ArcGIS API for JavaScript.Workaround
Only add the service to the map when it is visible.
OR
Re-add the selection symbol when it gets removed:
featureLayer.selectFeatures(query, FeatureLayer.SELECTION_NEW);
