Additional Information

This is a known limitation in ArcMap. In the ArcMap display, the Hindi characters are using the fallback font mechanism to display using a font that supports these characters on the fly'. This is why the characters are displayed properly in ArcMap display. When exporting to PDF, does not have a fallback mechanism that re-encodes the font characters and embeds them into the PDF using the new font. ArcMap uses the requested font (Arial) that does not support Hindi characters. This displays the NotDefFont character in blank squares.

Workaround

  • Use a font that supports the characters to be used (for example, Arial Unicode MS). The font characters are included in the exported PDF.
  • Use ArcGIS Pro. In ArcGIS Pro, the output is enhanced to properly fall back during the export. The MXD file can be imported into ArcGIS Pro, and exported.
