Workaround

The original shapefile's metadata contains duplicate entries for a field: 'Shape' and 'SHAPE'. This is carried over when the data is loaded into the geodatabase. Original shapefile data has matching alias, but wrong data type. After loading into the geodatabase, the alias matches up with the data type, but these are associated with the wrong field name.

Delete one of the field entries in the metadata editor (suggest "SHAPE") and save the changes. Click another tab, then view the metadata again to trigger an automatic metadata update.
