Features from an ArcGIS Server 10.0 SP5 map service are permanently highlighted when viewed in ArcMap, if the map service is first used to export a keyhole markup language (KML) via the GenerateKML REST interface.

Restart the service or publish the service through a map service definition (MSD) file, instead of map document (MXD) file.
