Workaround
1. Use Feature Class To Feature Class in batch mode. In batch mode, you can copy and paste each row, and just change the output feature class to have a valid name. 2. Use Data Interop > Quick Export. I think this is the better workaround because it works the way Feature Class To Shapefile (multiple) should work. That is, you can choose the layers with the gnarly names, and it automatically changes “.” to “_”. And it doesn’t mind spaces or (). It does however choke on back slashes and forward slashes.
