Extent rectangles with leader lines set at certain scales points horizontally and crashes ArcMap, which then corrupts the map document.

Workaround

--Set either a larger scale on the overview data frame or a smaller scale on the main data frame so that an extent rectangle can be drawn.--Disable the Show Leader option in the Extent Indicators Tab (Data Frame Properties).
