Exporting a shapefile to a geodatabase that has an attribute named Shape_Area retains the attribute values and does not update after editing.

Additional Information

Shapefiles do not include or maintain shape_length or shape_area. Also notice that the name of shape_length field is cut due to 10 char limit.

Workaround

1) Do all the edits in the feature class.2) Recalculate the fields using the Calculate Geometry tool.
