Additional Information

Esri does not have source code for Microsoft GDI, which is the dependency whose performance appears to be affected by the 20H2 update. This OS change appears to have created a large slowdown in Microsoft GDI overall.

Workaround

  • Open AdvancedArcMapSettings.exe from the ArcGIS Desktop install location (e.g. C:\Program files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.8\Utilities)
  • Navigate to the Print/Export tab.
  • Change the output raster buffer size to 256.
  • Click Apply.

For an extremely shortened running time: Use Windows 10 version 1909 or version 1809.

NOTE: Changes applied through AdvancedArcMapSettings are per-user, so if a large organizational deployment is planned, the same change can be applied directly through the registry or group policy. Refer to the AdvancedArcMapSettings documentation for information on which regkey to change in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
