Displaying a feature class in ArcMap and opening the properties in Catalog, either ArcCatalog or the Catalog pane of a different ArcMap session, creates an open transaction in SQL Server.

Workaround

Refreshing the database connection in ArcCatalog, or disconnecting and reconnecting, clears the open transaction from SQL Server. The same when the feature class properties is opened from the Catalog pane of another ArcMap session.
