Direct Connection does not allow a copy/paste between two feature classes if username and password are not stored in connection properties of ArcCatalog.

Workaround
Drag/drop the feature classes from ArcCatalog into the ArcMap session. After supplying the username/password information for the direct connection, the copy/paste works just fine.Steps to Reproduce
