Conversion tools will error when changing the field length property of file geodatabase table or feature class to a smaller value if there are trailing spaces.

Workaround

Modify the End Position property be the new field width minus one. From Field Map, expand the field, right-click on the input table/field, from the Format dialog, edit the End Position setting.
