Calculate field on a feature class in an ArcSDE geodatabase participating in a 1-1 join fails to update the origin table outside of an edit session.

Description

When using the Calculate Field tool on a feature class that participates in a join stored in an ArcSDE Enterprise geodatabase, the following error message is returned.

Error:   
Objects in this class cannot be updated outside of an edit session.

Cause

This is a known limitation in ArcGIS 9.2. See NIM034243 for more information. 

Workaround

Start an edit session prior to running the Calculate Field tool. The bug is fixed in ArcGIS 9.3.
