Bug

Basemap services added to map documents via the 'Add Basemap...' menu crashes ArcMap when being rendered at 3840x2160 resolutions; the equivalent service pulled from a direct GIS Server Catalog connection while being rendered at 3840x2160 does not.

Additional Information

ArcGIS Desktop (including ArcGIS Engine and ArcObjects) is in mature support and will be retired March 1, 2026. Mature support means the end of functionality-based patches and hotfixes; therefore, this issue will not be addressed. There are no plans for future releases of ArcGIS Desktop, and it is recommended that you migrate to ArcGIS Pro. See Migrate from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro for more information. https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-pro/resources/migrate

Workaround

Establish a connection to Basemap services through ArcGIS GIS Server and add Basemaps to map documents via this method. 1. In the Catalog window, double-click 'Add ArcGIS Server'. Select 'Use GIS Services'. 2. Paste the following URL in the Server URL box: https://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/3. Disregard User/Pass authentication and click 'OK'. A connection to the Server is established. 4. Expand this Server connection and browse.
