ArcMap returns a sorting error when sorting a text field with a length greater than 255 characters. No error for this process is returned in 9.3.1.

Workaround

Apply a defintion query to the layer, for example "OBJECTID" > 0 will still return all the values, but it appears to modify the sql query in such a way that you are able to succesfully sort the attribute table
