ArcMap must not request for the old ArcSDE database connection credentials when the old server is turned off and the new MXD file is set up with the correct data source to the new server.

Additional Information

The design for Set Data Source from ArcCatalog is to update the data source’s file path. Additional layer properties must be edited in ArcMap.

Workaround

Three workarounds: 1. When the prompted for the older server credentials appears, click Cancel. 2. Run the MXD through the MXD Doctor. 3. Create a Python script to copy all the layers over to a blank MXD.
