Workaround
1) Open a blank ArcMap document2) Load the "Waterbody - Perennial.lyr" file to ArcMap3) Turn off the labels under the Layer tab4) Point the lyr file to the Waterbody feature class in the geodatabase5) Click apply (the data should display6) go back to the Labels Tab 7) For each of the Class edit the SQL query of SHAPE.AREA to SHAPE_Area8) Turn on the Labels and select ApplyIt will now display.
