Description

**This issue has been resolved in ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine, Server) 9.3.1 Service Pack 2.**

ArcMap crashes when saving a .mxd file that references an inserted picture, such as JPEGs, whose folder path cannot be found. ArcMap crashes when accessing the properties of a missing inserted image.

Cause

This is a known issue. This issue has been addressed in the ArcGIS 9.3.1 Unreferenced Inserted Picture Patch. See the corresponding link in the Related Information section below.

Workaround

Download and install the ArcGIS 9.3.1 Unreferenced Inserted Picture Patch. See the link corresponding in the Related Information section below.
If you are not able to download and install the patch, delete any inserted pictures with broken links and reinsert them as necessary.

1. In most cases, a picture with a folder path that can no longer be found appears in the layout view or data view as a text box listing the missing path. For example:

2. Select the inserted picture and delete it.

3. If necessary, add the picture again.

Note:
The picture can be embedded as part of the map document, if the map needs to be sent to someone who may not have the picture file.
