Workaround

Remove the Colormap for the ERDAS Imagine 16 bit image using Delete Colormap tool (ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools --> Raster --> Delete Colormap). After the colomap is deleted, the image can be viewed in ArcMap 9.2 but still crashes in ArcCatalog 9.2
