ArcMap 10.6.1 crashes intermittently when using the Select Features tool and selecting 'Add to Current Selection' on multiple features in shapefiles and feature classes.

A patch was released for another issues but has resolved this issue as well. Please download the patch here: https://support.esri.com/en/download/7636

Workaround

  • Use Select By Location or Select By Attributes to make the needed selection.
  • Make the selection in the attribute table. 
  • The issue does not occur for both ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap 10.6. 
Applying the ArcGIS 10.6.1 Buffering Degenerated Polygon Patch seems to resolve the crash. Though the patch is originally meant for another issue, it can be used to potentially solve the issue.
