Duplicate of BUG-000107849. This is previously submitted as BUG-000107849.Workaround
Three workaround options:- Insert a numeric field into the spreadsheet (video attached).
- Save the Excel file as a .csv (comma delimited).
- Import as a table to a file geodatabase and work with the converted table.
