Workaround

  1. Before running the Import Floorplans to Indoors Database tool, create a new field in the Units feature class called UNIT_ID_CUSTOM and assign it a field type of text.
  2. Open the spreadsheet and update the target field name in Annotation to Field from Unit ID to UNIT_ID_CUSTOM.
  3. Run the Import Floorplans to Indoors database tool as mentioned above in step 5.
  4. Examine the attribute table of the Units feature class. The data is written successfully to the feature class.

Custom fields are able to be written with CAD data, but no default fields beyond Use Type. Users can delete the default fields and then rename the custom fields to have the same name as the default fields and they should be able to continue working with no issues.
