Annotations do not retain the font attribute information on the original machine after being opened on a machine without the font installed.

After review by the development team, it has been determined that this issue is related to a known limitation with the software that lies outside of Esri's control. The issue's Additional Information section may contain further explanation.
Additional Information
This is caused by a known limitation of how ArcMap leverages Windows Fonts. ArcMap''s use of Windows Fonts. Windows Font''s will revert to Arial when one is missing and the class extension is re-written in this case which casuse the reverted font to be written into the package.
Workaround
Change the font manually in the annotation feature class properties by clicking the Symbology tab, and using symbol substitution.
