"An unknown error occurred" is returned when creating a blank layer at developers.arcgis.com with a well-known ID (WKID) that falls outside the region and extent set in the ArcGIS Online organization settings.

This issue will not be addressed in the current release cycle. If this is still a concern, contact Esri Support Services.

Workaround

  • Modify the default extent in the ArcGIS Online organization settings to match the general area of the WKID specified when creating a layer with <a href="http://developers.arcgis.com" target="_blank">developers.arcgis.com</a>.
  • Use a WKID that matches the default extent set in the ArcGIS Online organization settings when creating the layer.
