Bug

After installing ArcIMS 9.3 Service Pack 1, data accessed by ArcMap Service from ArcSDE is drastically slower because the SDE connection resets for each request (The gsrvr process is recycled for each GET_IMAGE or GET_FEATURES request).

Description

ArcIMS - ArcMap Server performs slower after installing Service Pack 1 when the data is stored in ArcSDE.

Cause

Normally, ArcIMS makes a connection to ArcSDE when a map service is started and uses that data connection for the life of the service until it is recycled.

After installing Service Pack 1, ArcMap Services is shutting down the ArcSDE connection and establishing a new connection on each request to the server. This is causing these services to perform slower than 9.3 due to the extra overhead of re-establishing the ArcSDE connection.

Note:
This is specific to ArcMap Services with data coming from ArcSDE. It does not affect ArcIMS ImageServices or services containing file-based data.

Workaround

As of January 23, 2009, a patch is available from ESRI that addresses this issue. All users affected by this problem should download and install the patch at their earliest convenience from the link in the Related Information section.
