The error message in the Scene Viewer is correct. Point Cloud Scene Layers are indeed not supported in the Scene Viewer in Portal 10.5. The first Portal version of the Scene Viewer to support Point Cloud Scene Layers will be 10.5.1. In the meantime the layers published to Portal can be consumed in the arcgis online Scene Viewer.

Workaround

After uploading to My Content and selecting the option to 'Publish this file as a hosted layer," add the Service URL to the ArcGIS Online scene viewer.
