Adding a file geodatabase topology to ArcMap from ArcCatalog causes ArcMap to crash if ArcCatalog has not been closed since creating it.

Workaround

Use a personal geodatabase, close ArcCatalog after creating the topology, or use the Catalog window in ArcMap to create the topology.
