Use a Spatial ETL tool instead of the Quick Import tool. Manually modify the output field length in the User Attributes section of the Feature Type Properties window. Safe Software provided a toolbox containing a Spatial ETL tool that demonstrates this process. This toolbox has been attached to this bug.Steps to Reproduce
