This behavior is as-designed. For this case with layer input, the field map source string includes the layer name. If the input layer does not match the layer name that is saved in the source .fieldmap file, the fieldmap is reset, since the field map object/engine rejects it. If the input layer is the same name as the source in the .fieldmap file, the fieldmap honors the saved settings in the file.
